What is APOL1- Mediated Kidney Disease?
APOL1- mediated kidney disease (AMKD) is a genetic (inherited) kidney condition involving abnormalities of the APOL1 genes. This abnormality predominantly affects individuals of African Ancestry. AMKD can lead to a condition known as FSGS (focal segmental glomerulosclerosis) and can increase the liklihood of developing End Stage Kidney Disease.
Who should be tested?
Generally, people who have protein in the urine and CKD with no identifiable cause and a family history of kidney disease should be tested. To determine if you are an appropriate candidate for genetic testing, you should talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of testing.
How can I get tested?
If you are interested in being tested for APOL1 mediated kidney disease, talk to your Nephrologist. If you don’t have a Nephrologist, reach out to us in the Connect tab and we’ll see how we can help.
