Kidney Beans is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to change the outcomes in people who are at risk of developing kidney disease. We provide free urine testing for kidney disease and work through education and outreach in the local community.

What do kidneys do?

Clean your blood. Then you pee out the toxins.

What causes kidney disease?

In the United States, the most common causes of kidney disease are Diabetes and high blood pressure. There are other causes of kidney disease including heart disease, lupus and more.

What are the symptoms of kidney disease?

There are none. There are no symptoms of kidney disease until your kidneys are pretty much completely gone. The exceptions to this are kidney stones and kidney infections which cause pain and sickness. Otherwise, you’ll never know if your kidney’s aren’t cleaning your blood properly unless you get blood work done.

Can I tell how well my kidneys work by how much I pee or the color of my pee?

No. See what I just said above about symptoms of kidney disease.

What should I ask the doctor when I go?

Ask them about your GFR. You can find out your GFR from a blood test. This tells you how much kidney function you have.
