There are 5 stages of CKD

The stage of CKD is determined by your eGFR.

Stage 1: eGFR >90ml/min with some other kidney or lab abnormality.

Stage 2: eGFR 60-89 ml/min with some other kidney or lab abnormality.

Stage 3a: eGFR 45-59 ml/min

Stage 3b: eGFR 30-44 ml/min

Stage 4: eGFR 15-29 ml/min

Stage 5: eGFR less than 15ml/min

What can I expect with Stage 3 CKD?

Expectations and prognosis of chronic kidney disease are highly dependent on the cause of the CKD. This should be discussed directly with your doctor.

What can I do to protect my kidneys?

The most impactful thing you can do to protect your kidneys is maintain a healthy lifestyle. Maintain a healthy diet and fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, make sure your blood pressure is well controlled, make sure diabetes is well controlled and avoid any substances that are harmful to kidneys.

What kind of diet should I follow if I have CKD?

Dietary recommendations are highly dependent upon the stage of CKD. In general, a low salt, moderate protein diet is best. Decrease in potassium and phosphorus intake are generally recommended for stages 4 and 5 CKD however this should be discussed directly with your doctor.

Is kidney disease reversible?

When there is chronic damage to the kidneys, this generally cannot be undone.
