Diabetes
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition where your body can’t control your blood sugar. It may be because your body doesn’t make enough natural insulin or because your body doesn’t respond to the insulin you do make.
How do I know if I have diabetes?
You need to have blood work done. Ask your doctor about your Hemoglobin A1c. Write that down. That’s your diabetes number. If that number is 6.5 or higher, you have diabetes.
What happens if my diabetes isn’t under control?
Overtime, uncontrolled diabetes leads to many problems- kidney failure, decreased sensation in your feet which lead to getting sores and wounds on your feet and eventually the need for amputations. Uncontrolled diabetes also affects your eyes and can ultimately make you blind.
How can I prevent diabetes or control my diabetes?
Start by knowing where you stand. Get your labs checked by your doctor. If you have a family history of Type II Diabetes, it is important to know that you are at risk for developing diabetes. Maintain good habits with your diet and exercise routine and avoid excessive sugar intake. If you already have diabetes, I recommend following your doctor’s instructions about the appropriate medications you should be taking. Work on losing weight and creating healthy habits in your daily life.
