UTI
(Urinary Tract Infection)
What is a UTI
A Urinary Tract Infection (infection) is an infection that occurs somewhere in the urinary system. The infection can be in either the bladder or it can include the kidney. UTIs are more common in women but can occur in both men and women. In women, UTIs are typically caused by poor hygiene or bladder problems that prevent people from fully emptying their bladder. UTIs can occur after sexual intercourse which is why it is recommended for women to urinate after intercourse.
UTI vs STI
A UTI is a non-sexually transmitted infection and an STI is a sexually transmitted infection. If you are concerned about a UTI or STI, you should go see your primary care provider.
How do I know if I have a UTI?
Symptoms of a UTI include burning with urination and increased frequency of urination. Sometimes there can be an odor but an odor does not always mean there is an infection. If a UTI is left untreated, it can become severe enough to cause severe illness with fever, kidney failure and require hospitalization.
What should I do if I have recurrent UTIs?
It’s always good to talk to your doctor about this but a good rule of thumb is to maintain good hygiene. Keep your genital area clean with regular bathing. When wiping, always wipe front to back. Urinate after intercourse. If you are still having UTIs you may need to be on antibiotics long term so be sure to reach out to your primary care doctor. You may even need to see a Urologist.
